A Message To the Student Body Regarding The Discontinuation of DACA

Posted on Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Fellow Students:

Attorney Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump Administration would rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy unless the U.S. Congress appropriately codifies it into law. Even though we still need to gain more understanding of the implications of this decision, I know my fellow students are concerned about themselves, their families, and their peers. As President of ASUN, I ensure you that ASUN stands in full support of our DACA/undocumented students.

My administration believes in your dreams; we believe in your desire to be contributing members of our larger society; we believe in the value of the intellectual capital you bring to class every day; we believe in the work ethic instilled in you by your families. ASUN believes in you and stands with you unequivocally.

We are fully committed to your success both inside and outside of the classroom. We will continue to support you in a variety of ways by providing for your safety through Campus Escort and providing your continued social connection through our programs and services.  We will continue to support a legislative agenda of advocacy – on campus, within the NSHE system, at the Nevada State Legislature and in the U.S. Congress.

I will continue to work with student leaders across the nation to ensure that our collective voices are heard loud and clear in the halls of the U.S. Congress: Every human being has value.  Thank you for making Nevada your home.  We are a better state and a better university because you are here.  I look forward to working together to build a better future for all of us.
